Street children – the facts

India has more than 40 million children living rough on the streets of its towns and cities. With little or no contact with their families, these children – often orphans – are malnourished and extremely vulnerable. Sexual and physical abuse is common, with an estimated 500,000 children forced into the sex trade annually, maybe more. Aids and HIV is rampant with more than 5.2 million infected children. Fifty percent of children between 6 and 14 have no access to primary education, while India has the highest amount of child labour in the world.“Children living on the streets are often employed as child labour because they are cheap and will work long hours without complaining.
